Cookie policy

The short version

Interaction Checker has no login and no advertising. One cookie of its own records your answer to the cookie notice, and the only thing that notice controls is whether analytics runs: Plausible, which sets no cookies, and Google Analytics, which sets the two cookies listed below. This page explains what the site keeps or measures, and how to change or remove it.

Local storage: your checker list

When you add medicines, supplements, or foods in the checker, the list is saved in your browser's local storage under the key interaction-checker:v1. Local storage is a browser feature, not a cookie: it is never sent to any server, it is not readable by other websites, and it only exists so that your list is still there next time. Remove it with the "Clear" button in the checker, or by clearing site data for this site in your browser settings. The site also caches its own pages and drug data in your browser (a service worker) so it loads fast and works offline; that cache holds nothing personal and clears with your site data. One more local storage key, interaction-checker:theme, is set only if you switch the site to dark mode (or back) with the sun and moon button, so the page opens in the theme you chose.

Your cookie choice

The cookie notice shows once. Your answer is stored in the cookie ic_consent (first-party, 180 days, never sent anywhere but this site) and mirrored in local storage under ic-consent, so the notice does not come back on every visit. It holds two switches: Essential, which is always on and covers nothing more than remembering this answer, and Analytics, described next. If you leave the notice unanswered it closes itself after about twenty seconds and records what is already running: Essential on, Analytics on, and nothing else. Nothing new starts at that moment. In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google Analytics stays cookieless until you accept Analytics. Your privacy choices in the footer of every page reopens your preferences at any time.

Analytics

We use two analytics services to learn which pages and features help. Plausible Analytics counts page views and a few coarse events without cookies. Google Analytics 4 measures the same page views and events and sets the two cookies listed above. We run Google Analytics with Google signals and ad personalization turned off and do not use it for advertising. In the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland it runs without cookies until you accept Analytics. Turn Analytics off in the cookie preferences and neither service counts your visits, and the Google Analytics cookies are removed. A content blocker that blocks them does the same. The site works exactly the same either way.

Strictly necessary cookies from our host

The site is delivered by Cloudflare. In rare situations, for example when it needs to tell a browser from an automated bot, Cloudflare may set a short-lived security cookie such as __cf_bm. These cookies are strictly necessary for the site to be served securely, contain no personal information, and expire within about 30 minutes.

Third-party links

Links to DailyMed, openFDA, NIH, and other sites lead to services with their own cookie practices. The optional FDA lookup in the checker sends only the name you typed to api.fda.gov, which does not set cookies on this site.
