Sumatriptan and naproxen and Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide interaction
Sumatriptan and naproxen and Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide: both prescribing labels describe an interaction that usually calls for monitoring, a dose change, or spacing the doses.
Usually manageable with monitoring or a dose change. Tell your pharmacist you take both.
What the FDA labels say
From the Sumatriptan and naproxen (Sumatriptan and Naproxen Sodium) label · effective 2025-10-30
Patients at greatest risk of this reaction are those with impaired renal function, dehydration, hypovolemia, heart failure, liver dysfunction, salt depletion, those taking diuretics and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or ARBs, and the elderly.
ACE Inhibitors and ARBs: Concomitant use with sumatriptan and naproxen sodium tablets in elderly, volume depleted, or those with renal impairment may result in deterioration of renal function.
Diuretics: NSAIDs can reduce natriuretic effect of loop and thiazide diuretics.
Monitor patients to assure diuretic efficacy including antihypertensive effects.
In patients who are elderly, volume-depleted (including those on diuretic therapy), or have renal impairment, coadministration of an NSAID with ACE inhibitors or ARBs may result in deterioration of renal function, including possible acute renal failure.
From the Valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide (Diovan HCT) label · effective 2026-02-13
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agents (NSAIDs), Including Selective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitors (COX-2 Inhibitors): In patients who are elderly, volume-depleted (including those on diuretic therapy), or with compromised renal function, coadministration of NSAIDs, including selective COX-2 inhibitors, with angiotensin II receptor antagonists, including valsartan,…
Monitor renal function periodically in patients receiving valsartan and NSAID therapy.
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) : May increase risk of renal impairment.
The antihypertensive effect of angiotensin II receptor antagonists, including valsartan, may be attenuated by NSAIDs including selective COX-2 inhibitors.
Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs and COX-2 selective inhibitors) - When Diovan HCT and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents are used concomitantly, the patient should be observed closely to determine if the desired effect of the diuretic is obtained.
