Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) Clinical Impact: MAOI interactions with opioids may manifest as serotonin syndrome or opioid toxicity (e.g., respiratory depression, coma) [see Warnings and Precautions ( 5.3 )].
Intervention: The use of Hydromorphone Hydrochloride Injection or Hydromorphone Hydrochloride Injection (HPF) is not recommended for patients taking MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping such treatment.
• Serotonergic Drugs : Concomitant use may result in serotonin syndrome.
Avoid concomitant use in patients receiving MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping treatment with an MAOI.
Examples: phenelzine, tranylcypromine, linezolid Mixed Agonist/Antagonist and Partial Agonist Opioid Analgesics Clinical Impact: May reduce the analgesic effect of Hydromorphone Hydrochloride Injection and Hydromorphone Hydrochloride Injection (HPF) and/or precipitate withdrawal syndrome.

Commonly used serotonergic agents include serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, buspirone, serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists (triptans), and opioids, including meperidine.
